What light you like for tactical shotgun?

I'm getting a tactical shotgun soon and want a light on it. Which lights are good, and which are best avoided? (I know the generic stuff is junk, I'm expecting to buy Surefire, Streamlight or similar brands) I don't want/won't pay for a picatinny rail system, just a well-made light that is hard to knock off.

Dunno which shotgun I'll get, the local shop had a basic Remington 870 on hand. The Mossberg 5XX's are about the same price too ($400) and both are standard police issue stuff. I've heard from multiple sources there's not a whole lot of difference between them.

I like a TLR-1 since it is metal, bright, and around 100 bucks. I think it is made by Streamlight.

I need a light for my shotgun as well, but there no way I'm paying +$200 for a damn flashlight! Are there good, lower price solutions?

My surefire "flashlight" has a instant on/off switch and an "always on" switch, which is designed perfectly. It is blindingly bright.
If I would consider taking another human beings life and be willing to live with the consequeces....Things like possible attorney fees of $75,000 to defend myself, or just the moral aspects. I will not be such a cheap bastard as to tape a flashlight to my shotgun, that probably won't work in a pinch anyway, just to save $200. But that's just me.

Re: What light you like for tactical shotgun?

I guess because I have been using the sharper image lights for years ( the ones with no batteries but a crank magneto setup)
That the prices I see are mind blowing. When did flashlights jump up to 1-200 bucks? I noticed last month in a buyers guide for guns.
I know the dollar is worthless but jeez

My comment about the duct tape was in jest, but for me, the point remains; no doubt Surefire makes a very well-engineered product and it gets high marks on gun forums, but it is still just a flashlight. I would be more than willing to pay a reasonable amount for a product whose proper use has very serious consequences.

In this case, "reasonable" to me, would be around 50 bucks. YMMV.

Re: What light you like for tactical shotgun?

A pressure switch is a must. Better not to have a light on your shotgun than have one without a quick-on/off switch. You want the light to benefit you, not be a "here I am, shoot me" beacon for the enemy.

I have had zero problems with the TacStar WLS 2000.

An example:

(Cabela's is probably overpriced, as usual, so look at other retailers via Google)

I apologize if my response was mean spirited. Our weapons and their use should be taken seriously and responsibly.

Re: What light you like for tactical shotgun?

I have a surefire for my 870. You definitely want a pressure switch with your light. As stated above, you only want the light on when YOU want it on! You could hit the light on, blind the intruder, and move your position in the dark, in case you have a scenario when you didn't want to blow said intruder away. Does anyone know if the blinding light works on animals, like a dog for instance? I know they could still smell you, and hear you. Somehow I would guess it does not work to blind animals.

Welcome. The WLS 1000 is barely useful. Pretty low output of light.

I started out thinking that Surefire lights were comically overpriced too, and now I own two: a L1 for everyday carry and a Z2 that is the nightstand/"bump-in-the-night" light. They cost $185 and $125 respectively, and both of them have clicky tailcaps (I likes the clickeys, though I don't know if they can combine with a remote switch...?).

The best way to explain why I paid for the Surefires, is three reasons--1) they had key features that I considered paramount, 2) they are made well and 3) they work the way they're supposed to. I looked around online a LOT and could not find cheaper alternatives that were quite the same. There's other good light companies like Pelican, and most of the Pelican lights cost less than most of the Surefires--but the lights that Pelican makes aren't intended for the same uses as good tactical lights are.

The L1 I bought because it was a LED bulb and it had two power levels--one very bright, and another lower level with a 90+ hour run-time.

The Z2 is a combat/cigar light, and it fits in the hand properly and has a easy-to-activate tail-cap power button.

I also have a Streamlight TLR-1 on the Glock. I need a light on the gun because I live alone and should someone shut the power off outside and then get in, I am certain that I cannot reliably hold 1) the gun, 2) a flashlight and 3) dial a cellphone at the same time. My self-defense guns need lights.

-----

Some of the Surefire lights do still seem way overpriced--the $550 vertical-foregrip light makes me wonder, but they seem to hold a patent on the design as I haven't seen any other US company offer a similar light. (Taiwan airsoft companies don't count here!) There is a cheap holder for a light that has a trigger to activate the tailcap switch, but that's not as solid and likely not as bright as the Surefire item.

-----

Surefire and Streamlight are both good. (-ugh, the cheapest Surefire Rem 870 forend is $260 now-)
I never heard of TacStar before,,, -and the mount used on that shotgun photo does not impress me.

I had a setup like that once. The shock from shooting would either shake the light loose, or if i tightened enough so that wouldn't happen, the clamp on the magazine would foul up feeding the rounds. I got rid of it.

I had a surefire forend and it was well worth the money. Too bad it fell off my fishing boat.

Anything is possible when something is not installed correctly.

I like how the Surefire ones have the switches integrated into the fore-end, do any other companies have setups like that?

Istalled as intructed by the manufacturer. Poor design. Looked great, worked great, until you shoot. I don't imagine most people shoot their "tactical" shotguns, just keep it under the bed.
